Dianne Schroeder
I was born in 1953, which puts me at the right age to remember certain historical events that were going on. In the 1950s and 1960s, there was the assassination of JFK, civil rights heating up, and the Beatles' debut on the Ed Sullivan Show (these events don't seem to be to be so far along, but to my son, who is now 21 years old, they seem to be ancient history, which makes me to be the Ancient Mariner in person, I guess). In the 1970s and 1980s, there were flower power children & the Vietnam War. The point of all this is the events- whether they are local, national, or global-shape what we are, our opinions and attitudes, and of course, the things that happen in our lives. When I was born in Virginia, my father was in the Boy Scouts as a commissioner. He rejoined the Army as a second lieutenant and we moved to Camp Pendleton, California. We moved every three years to a new place as I grew up (Virginia, California, Texas, Oklahoma, Germany, Texas, and Colorado). So I am a very well traveled person (Personally, I wouldn't recommend this as you never get any childhood friends or set down any roots).
I started my art "career" at the tender age of 4 or 5. However, my parents were none too thrilled about my choice of medium (crayons on the walls and pencils in books). I persisted in more traditional medias, and by the time I was in High School, I had advanced to acrylic, pastels, pen and ink, oils, etc. I joined the US Navy out of High School so I could get my GI Bill to pay for college (They were not putting women on ships at the time, so I figured I had a pretty good chance of being near the beach).
Four years of Navy, and then college. I have a BA in Biology with a minor in Art, which makes little sense now, but at the time seemed to. I went back in the Navy for another 4 years (because they sent me to England) and met the love of my life, Jerry Schroeder, and married him; got out of the Navy (my enlistment was up); and became pregnant with our son, Lee (in that order). So I was an Army Brat, active duty Navy, and US Air Force spouse. I've had more time in the military than some generals.
After RAF Mildenhall, UK, we went to Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, when the wall in Berlin fell. Jerry was sent to Turkey in Desert Storm (more historical stuff affecting my life). Jerry is now retired and is now working civil service in Colorado where we are raising our son who has ADHD. Now that Lee's in Community College, I have more time to pursue my interests, which is designing beaded jewelry and fine arts such as drawing and painting. Over the
years, I have produced paintings and drawings, but now I want to get very serious about it. I enjoy doing people and animals the most, because they express more emotions and action than a still life or a landscape piece.
In 2004, Jerry and I started a home business called Eye-Magination Arts, to sell my jewelry and art work (copies and originals), do commissioned work, and computer arts. So, for the rest, I am 5' 4" and getting shorter every year (or is it my son that keeps getting taller?), have freckles, and reddish blond hair (doing my best to keep it that way).
