Julia McMinn Evans
I use color, form, shape, and movement to express thoughts, feelings, and emotion for which I have no words. My paintings are created using mixed media: they may include (but are not limited to) inks, found objects, art papers, soft pastels, and various types of acrylics. I look for materials that glow; that lift off from the canvas and bring the viewer in. In landscapes I
explore shapes and forms that intrigue the viewer, colors that evoke feeling, and an abstraction that leaves one with more a feel for the place without presenting the detail that can be found in a photograph. In nonobjective pieces I work from a few basic structures, then allow the media to drive certain of my creative decisions, bearing in mind basic design principles of line and form, together with light and dark, cool and warm. Sometimes pathways emerge and figures are seen. Other times the viewer is drawn to textures. Often light and calligraphic elements weave through the background forms, providing movement and energy. I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but have lived and worked most of my life in the Pikes Peak Region of Colorado. I hold a BA (with distinction) in Fine Arts, from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. I am a member of the Palmer Lake Art Group, Palmer Lake, Colorado.
